The campaign is inspired by the NFL Draft – as the NFL drafts its next class of players, BBBSCNNJ will draft its next class of volunteer mentors (Bigs) to reach more youth (Littles) on the waitlist for a mentor.
Mentorship is proven to be one of the most powerful ways to change the trajectory of a young person’s life. Additionally, studies show that mentorship builds stronger social connections across diverse groups, leading to a more connected society. The Big Draft campaign seeks to recruit volunteer mentors who can help support the 100+ youth currently on BBBSCNNJ’s waitlist, ensuring that more young people have access to the guidance they need to succeed.
The New York Jets have been long-time partners of BBBSCNNJ, helping to amplify the positive impact of mentorship on young lives. This collaboration has fostered meaningful relationships, including one with Solomon Thomas, NY Jets Defensive Tackle and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America Game Changer. Thomas has actively engaged with Littles at various events, using his platform to advocate for transforming how young people communicate and connect about mental health—a message that has deeply inspired many Littles.
Volunteering as a mentor with BBBSCNNJ offers a rewarding and impactful experience that makes a lasting difference in a young person’s life. Mentors build meaningful relationships with their “Littles,” providing guidance, support, and encouragement while helping them navigate life’s challenges. The mentorship focuses on academic, social, and personal growth, with opportunities to engage in fun activities, explore new interests, and develop essential life skills. Through regular one-on-one interactions, mentors foster confidence and resilience in their Littles, while also gaining a sense of fulfillment and purpose from contributing to their community.
“We appreciate the NFL’s Inspire Change initiative and the New York Jets’ partnership on this recruitment effort,” said William Salcedo, Executive Director of BBBSCNNJ. “The Big Draft presents a unique opportunity to elevate awareness of the pressing need for dedicated, caring adult volunteers.”
The Big Draft campaign launches on February 10th and BBBSCNNJ’s goal is to recruit 60 Bigs in 60 days, just before the NFL Draft kicks off on April 24th. Volunteers that complete an application, interview, and training within the 60 days will be entered to win a Personalized Custom NY Jets Jersey and a BBBSCNNJ sweatshirt.
